Every shot results in a weapon becoming dirties. Residues of lead, powder or even plastic become
lodged in the rifling grooves of the gun. With each further shot, the deposit of dirt builds up
at these points, though almost imperceptibly and usually invisible to the naked eye. The negative
effect this has on the movement of the projectile is, however, enormous, for all dirt creates
resistance which influences the velocity, the twist and the ballistics of the projectile, and
hence the precision of the gun.
Gun care also includes the cleaning of corroded surfaces, caused by condensation as a result of
extreme temperature fluctuations, high humidity or improper storage of the weapon.
